how much is enough?

I just read an article (via slashdot) that explains what my thought process has been for some time now. Basically, what the heck does the average computer user need a tricked out, maximum speed, blow-your-mind-away computer system for?

As I write this entry, I am on a Pentium II 266 MHz machine, with an integrated video card. The computer is running Gentoo Linux, and allows me to surf 99% of the pages I want to look at, check e-mail, and chat with friends. Now, this is an extreme case of lower computer power being enough to do the job since Windows XP wouldn’t run on this box. But, Windows XP will run on the lower end Pentium IV’s.

When I a new computer in a couple months or so, I’m not buying the best system out there. I’ll probably build it from components, and spend $500-700. That will give me more computing power then Gentoo needs. It will also be enough to run Windows XP, but that won’t be happening

A final thought…At some point, a document editor or internet browser just can’t open any faster. :-)
